Chargers for traction batteries
In addition to the product features described, which apply to both the Acctiva and Selectiva product ranges, there are various other product features that can be adjusted for different battery types. In the following the product features of chargers for traction batteries are described.
The Active Inverter Technology that is integrated in these intelligent battery chargers enables electricity / energy costs to be kept to a minimum.
Their high efficiency rating of up to 96% and intelligent charging characteristics result in a power saving of up to 30%.
Conventional 50 Hz battery chargers incorporate a large transformer and consequently generate a very large starting current, which in turn results in a high peak current value. With Active Inverter Technology the starting current is considerably lower. Furthermore, the programmable switch-on times mean that the peak current value can be further influenced.
With Active Inverter Technology, the reactive current component is only a fraction of the size found with 50 Hz charging technology. This means that the company can save itself the considerable expense of compensating for reactive current.
Another aspect related to the energy costs is the cost of the connection values. The higher power of Active Inverter Technology means that in the transition range between 230V and 400V it is often possible to avoid investing in a 400V connection.
The lower current consumption means that the power supply to battery charging systems can be reduced by up to 25%.
In areas with a "weak" mains network and in production plants requiring large amounts of power, fluctuations in the mains voltage (overvoltage and undervoltage) may result.
If these fluctuations are not evened out, the result is slower battery charging times; Active Inverter Technology, however, does even out these mains voltage fluctuations.
Constant, active monitoring and adjustment of the charging current: This sets Active Inverter Technology apart from other systems. Unnecessary water consumption due to uncontrolled overcharging is now a thing of the past. Water levels now require less frequent topping-up - the service frequency and the resulting maintenance costs are thereby reduced by around half.
A raft of features provide the highest possible degree of safety for personnel, the battery and the charger.
- De-energised charger leads mean that they can be disconnected with no sparking; you can be confident that there will be no short-circuiting, and the danger of a detonating-gas explosion is reduced.
- Overcharging protection: When there are defective battery cells, the intelligent cut-out system protects against overcharging.
- Charge monitoring: The complete charging process is actively monitored. The battery is therefore always charged in accordance with its charge status. There is consequently no risk of overheating as a result of overcharging.
- Active mains voltage monitoring: If the mains voltage passes above or below a specific tolerance range, then the charger will switch off automatically.
- Degree of protection: The high degree of protection protects the charger in adverse environmental conditions.
- I-Puls: Accelerates charging by approx. 1 hour. When current pulses are matched accurately to the battery concerned, the battery can be supplied with more energy in a shorter space of time. This electronic form of electrolyte circulation results in charging time being reduced by around 1 hour. The additional cost of installing pneumatic electrolyte circulation (fitting hoses, air pump etc.) is no longer necessary.
- Air-Puls: The quickest and most economical way to charge batteries. If you need to charge batteries even more quickly, or if interim charging is required, Air-Puls is the ideal solution. It features pneumatic electrolyte circulation, batteries are charged in a remarkably short space of time, and any overcharging is only slight. Charge time saving: Approx. 2 hours. In the majority of cases there is need to replace the batteries.
- Programmable charging start time: Programmable charging start time enables you to take advantage of less-expensive power during the night.
- Time-controlled top-up charging: This alternative form of conservation charging prevents the capacity of the battery from being compromised when it remains unused for lengthy periods (e.g. over the weekend).
- Temperature-controlled charging: Final charging voltage is adjusted automatically according to battery temperature, ensuring optimum charging results even in adverse ambient temperatures.
- Signal lamp: This lamp, which is available for Selectiva products, uses a colour code to indicate the current charge status. The lamp, which is supplied as an optional extra, is also clearly visible at a considerable distance.
- Remote display: This optional extra enables chargers to be operated and monitored very easily from a distance of up to 50 m.
- Immobiliser: An optional immobiliser makes sure that neither the vehicle nor the charger can be inadvertently activated whilst charging is in progress. This optional extra is used particularly with on-board applications.
- Signal lamp controller: This enables four common-or-garden signal lamps to be connected to Selectiva Plus devices.
- Logging charging data: In order to monitor and analyse the latest charging cycles, the stored parameters can be transferred via a USB or RS232 interface.
- Air filter: An air filter is installed to avoid short circuits caused by dust particles.
