Family home with PV system featuring backup power supply and battery storage system

2020-09-10 / Germany, Leobendorf
Standard integrated PV Point of the Fronius Symo GEN24 Plus inverter supplies energy in the event of a power outage

Ecological passive house draws all energy from its photovoltaic system

In southern Germany, Tamara and Franz live with their two children in a passive house with an 8.5 kWp photovoltaic system on the roof. They use solar power for loads in the household, the heating and hot water. In 2019, a Fronius Symo GEN24 Plus hybrid inverter pre-production device was integrated into the PV system. In addition, a Fronius Smart Meter and a BYD battery storage system were also installed.

Optimising self-consumption with the Fronius Symo GEN24 Plus

“We have always endeavoured to use as much of our solar power as possible. Our installer recommended that we install a Smart Meter, and in doing so, we found that there is still some room for improvement when it comes to our self-consumption,” explains Franz.

With the help of the integrated energy management function and an analysis performed by the installer, flexible loads are activated if there is sufficient self-generated PV electricity available. Following these changes, the dishwasher now runs on battery power at night. Thanks to this simple measure, the family was able to increase its rate of self-consumption.

Backup power supply via the PV Point

With the PV Point of the Fronius GEN24 Plus hybrid inverter, the family can use an integrated basic backup power supply in the event of a power outage. A power outlet is supplied with PV power in the event of a power outage, so smaller loads such as a radio or mobile phone can be charged.

This PV Point is integrated as standard and provides backup power at virtually no additional cost.

Hybrid inverter combined with a BYD battery storage system

The family has incorporated a 7.7 kWh battery storage system from BYD into their system. This provides the household with solar energy in the evening and at night. Thanks to the storage system, the family is almost completely self-sufficient in the summer months.

PV system generates energy for the heat pump

Franz and Tamara have chosen an air source heat pump for their heating system. Since the heating has a very low output, it requires little energy. Even on cloudy days, there is sufficient PV power from the roof to operate the heat pump. “Our installer has set the heater to be active around midday. This means we can cover almost all the energy required for heat and hot water using the PV system,” says Tamara.

Highlights of the Fronius Symo GEN24 Plus hybrid inverter

For Tamara and Franz, the Fronius Symo GEN24 Plus hybrid inverter impresses with the following features:

  • PV Point: integrated basic backup power supply
  • Energy management: 4 digital I/Os to increase self-consumption
  • Multi Flow Technology: parallel energy flows, even in backup power situations
  • Fronius Solar.web: evaluation and analysis tool for increased transparency

Energy system & eco-house:

  • 8.5 kWp photovoltaic system with Fronius Symo GEN24 Plus hybrid inverter
  • BYD storage system: BYD Battery-Box Premium HVS 7.7

  • Up to 90% self-sufficiency in the summer months
  • Ecological passive house with timber-frame construction, majority of building materials used from renewable raw materials
  • Compact heat pump unit with air supply and additional underfloor heating surfaces

PV Point

The PV Point is a backup power socket.

Its advantages:

  • No complex additional installations required
  • Supply of 1-phase loads in the household up to 3 kW
  • Low-cost backup power solution for cost-conscious system owners
  • Automatic activation in case of a grid outage
