Fruehauf Enhances Bulk Trailer Manufacturing with Fronius Welding Technology

Facility of Fruehauf

Fruehauf, a long‑established leader in UK trailer manufacturing, produces more than 500 tipping and bulk trailers each year at its Grantham headquarters, managing the entire process in‑house. To maintain its reputation for strength, reliability and build quality, the company has invested in advanced Fronius welding technology, ensuring consistent, high‑quality welds across both steel and lightweight aluminium trailer structures.

What's your welding challenge?

Every Fruehauf trailer contains numerous welded joints, many located in load‑bearing areas exposed to shock, vibration and torsion. The challenge is intensified when welding aluminium bodies, where controlling heat input is critical to avoid distortion, porosity and defects - particularly when joining thick structural components to thin sidewall panels. Fruehauf needed a solution that could deliver repeatable weld quality, support long weld seams and maintain productivity without compromising structural integrity or appearance.

Solution

Fruehauf addressed these challenges with Fronius TPS 400i welding systems, using Pulse welding and intelligent arc control functions to precisely manage heat input and ensure stable, high‑quality welds in aluminium and steel. The addition of JobMaster Push‑Pull torches improved wire feed reliability over long body lengths, while the FlexTrack 45 Pro welding carriage introduced semi‑automation for longitudinal seams, delivering consistent travel speed, reduced operator fatigue and significant time savings. Together, these technologies have improved efficiency, repeatability and weld quality, supporting Fruehauf’s commitment to reliable, UK‑built trailers.
