Sharing ideas on additive manufacturing with the University of Ljubljana

On 02/06/2017, guests from the University of Ljubljana visited the Fronius site in Wels. Back in their welding laboratory, Assistant Professor Damjan Klobcar and Dr Drago Bracun from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering perform tests in the field of additive manufacturing. They have already been successful in producing simple 3D geometries made from aluminium/silicon alloys, as well as unalloyed steels. To this end, assistant Professor Klobcar and Dr Bracun use the CMT (Cold Metal Transfer) welding process from Fronius, where the welding torch is guided by a CNC control unit.

The experts are currently looking at the feasibility of combining 3D welding and sensor technology. Measuring temperature as well as the geometry using lasers should support and help to improve additive manufacturing. In additive welding, layers of filler material (beads) are built up on top of one another to create a 3D shape. Measuring the bead immediately after welding allows the next bead to be re-configured so that a precisely structured geometry can be built up. In order to develop this process further, during the visit to Wels, Fronius and the researchers from the University of Ljubljana shared ideas and their experiences of additive manufacturing using CMT.
