Precision welding processes for the challenges of crane construction

Liebherr is a technology leader in international crane construction. The load-bearing structures of cranes (such as booms) are made of high-strength fine-grained structural steel. These materials are extremely sensitive to heat input and require welding processes that maintain a stable microstructure in the heat-affected zone and ensure the crane components exhibit the strength and resilience that are essential in day-to-day use. Pulse Multi Control (PMC) and Cold Metal Transfer (CMT) meet these high standards.

The challenge at Liebherr Nenzing

High-strength materials are not typically welded in the vertical-up position, as the “Christmas tree motion” commonly used in manual welding causes excessive heat input. The components to be welded must therefore be moved into a flat or horizontal position, which takes up significant time and resources when working with large-volume components. Given these challenges, Liebherr was looking for a welding process that would allow for welding in the vertical-up position using a continuous upward motion (stringer beads).

Challenge: Manual welding of vertical-up welds without a weaving motion

The solution: Vertical-up seams can be efficiently welded without repositioning

PMC Mix makes it possible to weld vertical-up seams without weaving from side to side By alternating between pulse and dip transfer arc phases, LSC (Low Spatter Control) controls heat input so precisely that stringer beads can be welded vertical-up with confidence, with no need to first rotate the component into an “ideal position”. This significantly shortens setup and handling times, reduces the risk of damage during repositioning, while at the same time increasing the welding speed compared to conventional processes.

CMT is also used for the root pass and final run, and LSC for the filling runs in the automated joining of chord tubes.
