TRUMPF Maschinen Austria
More output for TruBend bending machines

TRUMPF favors advanced welding technology from Fronius
TRUMPF Maschinen Austria, based in Pasching, has gained a global reputation thanks to its innovative bending machines. Setting itself high standards for productivity and quality, Trumpf counts on cutting-edge welding technology from Fronius.
Industry: Mechanical engineering
Company HQ: Pasching, Upper Austria
Sites: 1
Employees: approx. 665
Manufacture of: Bending machines, systems for die and panel bending, fully automated solutions
Fronius products used: LaserHybrid robotic welding cell with Fronius welding technology and HMI-T21 RS system controls, Fronius Pathfinder offline programming and simulation software
Process application: LaserHybrid, MAG

“Thanks to our new LaserHybrid gantry welding system we can skip the annealing process, which takes up a lot of time and money. We use the laser to heat the steel along the weld seam to between 150 °C and 180 °C, depending on the material. This reduces the cooling rate after welding so we can avoid hardening, cold cracks, and corrosion. Plus, producing in-house makes us more flexible and independent.”
The challenge facing TRUMPF
Due to capacity bottlenecks, the company had to source steel frames weighing several tons from external suppliers to manufacture its bending machines. This led to longer production times, limited flexibility in production, and unnecessary costs, largely because the supplier used manual rather than automated manufacturing processes. Spherodizing was necessary after welding to avoid unwanted hardening of the material, but steel reacts with oxygen when heated, oxidizes on the surface, and forms rust, which requires extensive sandblasting.

The solution:
automated LaserHybrid welding
LaserHybrid gantry welding system, consisting of a LaserHybrid and a MAG welding robot in combination with 2 tilt positioners, HMI-T21 RS system controls, and the Pathfinder offline programming and simulation software. The system allows retooling to take place parallel to production, high welding speeds, low-spatter and low-warpage welding, and a high degree of production flexibility as well as helping to avoid unnecessary production costs by eliminating time-consuming, cost-intensive rework.
The Fronius Pathfinder offline programming and simulation software shortens programming and teaching times and enables welding simulations to be held on the digital twin—a big plus for prototypes in particular.
